Frozen mice are a safe, convenient, and nutritious food for snakes and other carnivorous reptiles, available in various sizes to suit hatchlings through adults, providing essential protein and supporting healthy growth.
Frozen mice are a staple in the diet of captive snakes and other carnivorous reptiles. They provide a convenient, safe, and nutritionally complete food source that closely mimics what snakes would consume in the wild. Available in a range of sizes from tiny pinkies (1–3?g) to jumbo mice (31?g+), frozen mice allow keepers to feed snakes of all life stages, from hatchlings to adults.
One of the main benefits of using frozen mice is safety and convenience. Thawing is simple and quick: most keepers simply warm the mouse to room temperature or lightly in water, ensuring it is safe for immediate consumption.
Frozen mice also ensure consistent nutrition. They are typically bred for optimal health and nutrient content, providing snakes with the protein, fat, and calcium they need for growth, reproduction, and overall well-being. By offering different stages of mice—pinkies, fuzzies, hoppers, and adults—keepers can match prey size to their snake’s girth, which prevents regurgitation or underfeeding.
Overall, frozen mice are an essential component of responsible snake husbandry. They provide a safe, nutritious, and convenient solution for feeding snakes at every stage of life, helping ensure the health, growth, and longevity of captive reptiles.
Mice are the perfect long-term diet for most smaller species of snakes such as Corn Snakes, Rat Snakes, King Snakes, Milk Snakes, Western Hognose and other similar sized Colubrid. They are also ideal for feeding to smaller species of Boas and Pythons, such as Rosy and Kenyan Sand Boas.
Starting off your snake hatchlings with Day Old Pinkie Mice, working your way up to the large and jumbo sizes as the snake grows is standard practice for many Colubrid species. Some species such as Royal Pythons can be a little more selective in what they eat as hatchlings, if they refuse Rats initially, Mice or Multimammate are a great alternative.
Day Old Pinkie Mice are high in fat, making them ideal for young reptiles with a lot of growing to do. Adult mice are generally healthier than young rats of a similar size due to the ratio of muscle to fat, making these a nutritious food source for your reptiles. Although adult Corn Snakes for example will happily eat a Weaner Rat, it is much higher in fat than a Jumbo Mouse, which over time can cause problems with fatty liver and other obesity related issues.
Mice are also widely accepted by raptors and other birds of prey; many Monitor Lizards and Mammal species such as Ferrets.
