What is Cork Bark?

This natural product comes from Cork Trees, most of which are grown in Portugal and other areas in Europe. The cork is harvested without cutting down any trees, making this a sustainable product. The trees can live for around 300 years, from around 25 years old onwards, the bark can be stripped from the tree. This process actually encourages the tree to grow and regenerate the bark, which can be harvested every 9 years without damaging the tree.

It is deeply textured in varying shades of brown, often covered in dried moss and lichen, making it a beautiful, natural addition to any habitat. It is available in a wide range of shapes and sizes including flat, half round, tubes and branches. It can easily be cut to size, or broken to create multiple pieces to suit your animals needs.

The benefits of Cork Bark

Cork Bark is hugely versatile, it is suitable for virtually all species of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. The pieces will be readily used as hiding areas, for climbing on and basking, even for egg laying in some species.

The deeply textured bark is perfect for adding environmental enrichment, encouraging natural climbing and foraging behaviours. It is also perfect for aiding animals with their shedding cycle (ecdysis) providing areas to rub their bodies along to remove the old skin.

Unlike some other varieties of wood, cork bark does not rot or go mouldy in humid conditions. Cork is naturally buoyant and hydrophobic, meaning it will float if used in paludariums or aquariums. Because of its impermeable properties, it is perfect for use with reptiles and amphibians as it will not absorb and harbour bacteria and can be easily washed and scrubbed to remove any surface residue.

Our Cork Bark is responsibly sourced from Europe and is safe and natural for your exotic pet. Due to the drying process, our bark will also have minimal risk of introducing unwanted pests into your controlled environment. Though we do always advise soaking each piece to ensure there are no stowaways hiding in any of the crevices.

  • Suitable for all environments.
  • Perfect for decoration and ground cover.
  • Adds climbing and basking areas within the enclosure.
  • Does not rot or mould in high humidity areas.
  • Provides environmental enrichment.
  • Sustainably sourced from Europe.

How to use Cork Bark

There are several application methods that can be used.

  1. Place pieces on the substrate to provide multiple hiding areas
  2. Use vertically to provide climbing areas.
  3. Add multiple pieces to create elevated platforms for basking.
  4. Will float in water and can be used as ‘islands’ for various semi aquatic species.

Please note: Cork Bark will naturally vary in size, shape, colour and texture. Photos are for illustrative purposes only and does not show the actual piece you will receive. The piece you receive will be within the parameters of the size/weight purchased.
