Vietnam Black Tarantula

Selenocosmia species

The Vietnam Black Tarantula is a new, unidentified species! Fast and aggressive makes them suitable for experienced keepers only. If you have owned/breed this species, and would like to share any information, we would love to hear from you.

What the Vietnam Black Tarantula look like?

This species is pretty new to the collection, currently unidentified. I would say that the females have a leg span of approx. 5 inches (125mm), the males are slightly smaller at approx. 4 inches (100mm). Males have a dark brown, black body with copper coloured hairs mainly present over the abdomen. The legs have light brown lateral stripes and bands. Females are much darker and seem to have a black sheen. The lateral stripes are only just noticeable on the female's legs, as they are so faint.

Only experienced keepers should keep this species due to their aggressive nature.

Where are Vietnam Black Tarantulas from?

A ground dweller from Vietnam.

You should provide a temperature of 23-30C (75-85F) with a slight drop at night. They like the humidity to be slightly on the high side, ranging from 80-85%.

Are Vietnam Black Tarantulas easy to keep?

Experience keepers only!

Being a Terrestrial species (ground living), you need to provide the Tarantula with more ground space than height. Provide a deep substrate and plenty of hides like cork bark, flowerpots etc. Layer the bottom of the tank with approx. 3 - 4 inches (80 - 100mm) of substrate. You will find that this species will cover most of the tank with a think web!

Once a week, feed on a range of insects and depending on the age, the odd pinkie (baby mouse). Crickets can injury your tarantula during moulting, so any uneaten food should be removed if your tarantula doesn't seem interested, try feeding again a few days later. Always provide water, this can be via a shallow dish or Tarantula sponge!
